This approach to leadership is flawed. It relies on too much on a leader's ability to shift depending on the situation. If a leader simply had to always be a directing leader, or a coaching leader, then they would be a much more proficient leader. By stretching across the entire spectrum of leadership, one will find themselves either only applying one leadership style to all situations, or the absence of any style.

The Balance of Flexibility in Leadership

Thank you for sharing your perspective. You raise a valid concern—situational leadership does place a significant demand on a leader’s ability to adapt. It’s true that without careful attention, a leader might over-rely on one style or struggle to apply the right approach consistently. However, the strength of this approach lies in its flexibility: when done well, it allows leaders to meet individuals where they are, helping them grow and perform at their best. Like any leadership model, it requires practice, self-awareness, and reflection to use effectively.
